Described
by the Express and Star as "a Russian sax player with a reputation for hard
swinging and high excitement", saxophonist and composer Oleg
Kireyev began his career in 1984 with his group Orhan, based in his home city
of Ufa in Central Russia. Following the successful release of his albums "Bashkir
Legends" and "Romantic", and a period living and working
in Poland in the early nineties, Oleg was invited to tour in the USA with the
much respected American saxophonist Bud Shank in 1994. He followed this in
1996 with an appearance at the 30th Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Oleg's association with the UK and the Midlands in particular began with appearances at the Birmingham Jazz Festival in1997, where Oleg was invited to perform with several bands including Ray Alexander (USA), Andy Hamilton and the Happy Seals (France). In his British appearances Oleg also established musical links and friendships with prominent UK based musicians including Jean Toussaint and Dick Pierce, who will appear with Tim Amann's xTet in its opening concert in Shrewsbury.
Since 2002 Oleg has been Musical Director of Cool Train, Moscow's premier jazz club. He continues to tour and record regularly in Russia, Europe and the USA and made a welcome return to the UK in March and April 2006. Oleg appeared with the Tim Amann xTet in a number of concerts across the Midlands, and in London alongside trumpeter Dick Pierce and various other top British musicians.
